Built for those who serve others. Open to all who seek support.
Life can get heavy. Sometimes it happens all at once. Other times, stress, difficult experiences, responsibilities, and the pressure to keep going build slowly over time.
You may be dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, burnout, or simply feeling like you’re not yourself anymore. Maybe the ways you’ve learned to cope aren’t working as well as they used to. Or maybe you just know something needs to change.
At Home Safe Counseling, you don’t need to have everything figured out before reaching out.
I offer a warm, welcoming, and judgment-free place where you can talk openly about what’s going on, understand what may be underneath it, and work toward meaningful change.
In-person counseling in Frederick, Maryland, and telehealth throughout Maryland.
Therapy for First Responders
You take care of everyone else. Sometimes you need a place where you don’t have to be the strong one.
With 25 years of experience as a first responder, I understand firsthand the culture, demands, stress, and experiences that can come with the work.
You shouldn’t have to spend half of therapy explaining the job before you can start talking about what it’s doing to you.
Maybe you’re dealing with a difficult call or traumatic experience. Maybe years of stress and responsibility are catching up with you. You might be more irritable, anxious, disconnected, exhausted, or on edge. Maybe you’re having trouble sleeping or shutting your mind off when you get home. Or alcohol, substances, gambling, work, isolation, or other behaviors have gradually become ways to decompress or escape.
And sometimes there isn’t one particular problem. You just don’t feel like yourself anymore.
First responders come to therapy for much more than PTSD.
You know the job. I know the culture. We can start there.
You Don’t Have to Be a First Responder to Feel at Home Here
Home Safe Counseling is open to adults from all walks of life.
You may be struggling with anxiety or depression, recovering from difficult experiences, dealing with relationship or life changes, feeling overwhelmed by stress, or questioning some of the ways you’ve been coping.
Whatever brings you here, you’ll be treated with compassion and respect.
Therapy isn’t about being judged, labeled, or told how to live your life. It’s an opportunity to understand yourself better, develop healthier ways of dealing with what life throws at you, and make changes that matter to you.
Therapy That Feels Like a Conversation
Finding the right therapist isn’t only about credentials or treatment methods. You also need someone you can actually talk to.
My style is warm, straightforward, practical, and down-to-earth. I’ll listen, ask questions, offer another perspective when it might be helpful, and sometimes challenge you when I think you’re ready for it.
And yes, there will probably be some humor along the way.
The things that bring us to therapy can be serious, but that doesn’t mean every minute of therapy has to feel heavy.
My goal is for you to feel comfortable enough to be yourself, say what you actually think, and know you’re talking to someone who genuinely wants to understand.
Areas I Can Help With
Trauma & PTSD
Whether you’re dealing with a particular traumatic experience or the cumulative impact of years of difficult experiences, therapy can help you process what you’ve been carrying and reduce its impact on your life.
Anxiety & Depression
When worry, low mood, irritability, exhaustion, or feeling disconnected start interfering with everyday life, we can work together to understand what’s happening and find practical ways forward.
Stress & Burnout
Constantly being the person others depend on can take a toll. Therapy can give you somewhere to step out of that role and pay attention to what you need.
Behavioral Addictions & Unhealthy Coping
Alcohol, substances, gambling, work, isolation, or other behaviors can sometimes become ways of escaping, decompressing, or shutting things off. We'll approach those patterns with curiosity rather than judgment and work toward healthier ways of coping.
You Don’t Have to Wait Until Things Fall Apart
You don’t need a diagnosis, a crisis, or a perfectly organized explanation of what’s wrong before coming to therapy.
Sometimes knowing that something in your life isn’t working the way you want it to is enough.
You also don't have to know exactly what to say when you walk through the door.
We can start with where you are.
